Private House
‘Our challenge was to create a home that harmonised with the scale of the site while drawing from the local character and environment.’
We were commissioned to design a new home on a picturesque site at the edge of Ilkley. The client’s vision was for a contemporary family home that would seamlessly connect with its stunning natural surroundings.
The plot offers a stunning south facing view across the valley and towards the moors. While a traditional 1.5-storey house originally stood on the site, it no longer met the needs of a modern young family.
Nestled on a sloping landscape, the generous plot is framed by mature trees and neighbouring properties of varying cales and heights. Our design had to thoughtfully consider these contextual elements while maximising both the views and the site’s orientation.
Our challenge was to create a home that harmonised with the scale of the site while drawing from the local character and environment. The design evolved into a splayed form, ensuring that every room on each floor would capture the beauty of the location and the sun’s movement throughout the day.
The main house features two storeys, with the main living space at ground floor and private bedroom areas on the first floor, accessed through a striking double-height entrance hall that immediately reveals sweeping views of the landscape beyond. Additionally, the home includes a discreet lower-ground basement, providing the family with entertainment spaces and garage facilities.
After comprehensive planning process, including a planning committee review , permission was finally granted in 2021.
The project is set to break ground in Summer 2023.
